Need a reference from school (Haven't studied there for 1 year) and it's summer holidays!?

I'm starting college in 4 weeks and I have just received a letter telling me that I need to bring a reference to the enrolment on 29 August. How am I supposed to get a reference from school while it's summer holidays? My brother said I should email some old teachers asking them politely if they can write me a reference, if I did that should I also send them a reference template attached to the email as I don't really want a reference written on a plain sheet of paper as it just wouldn't look very convincing. I really don't know what to do, and this is the only college i've applied for so if they don't let me in without a reference I won't even have a backup.. Thanks.

1. phone the school and ask. The office staff do not get long holidays as there is alot of admin to do.
