Do i need a domain name before i can create a website using Joomla?

Today, I sucessfully downloaded WampServer and Joomla in hopes of creating a website to showcase my graphic design portfolio. I even downloaded a free template to help get me started, but I am at a stand-still. I'm pretty savvy with the actual design process, but this 'HTML' and 'CSS' type of talk has me totally confused! I catch on pretty quickly, so can anyone direct me to a site or even a book that has some decent tutorials so I can get a grasp on the basics?

  1. Joomla is really simple to use, once you have a server that is going to host your website, you upload the joomla files to the directory that you have been given and then visit your site. From there you can configure everything and when you finish the set-up process, you must FTP back to the box and remove the installation files. After that you're pretty much done, and you just need to go onto the admin panel and configure your site's layout.
  2. Extract your Joomla files. Download FileZilla. Upload your Joomla files. Configure your Joomla setting to tie it to your website. Start building your site..
  3. if you want to showcase your design from your own computer then no you don't need a domain name or hosting however if you want clients to be able to view your designs on the web you will, As you have installed wamp i will assume that you will do it from your computer In your c:/wamp folder you should find a www folder this is where you will need to put joomla folder you should create a database for the joomla install, so start your wamp and left click on it (half circle in task bar goes from red, yellow then white) and click on MySQL and create a database with user name and password left click wamp again, left click local host then click on your joomla folder, left hand side of page (you may have to scroll down) then follow the joomla install instructions
