How do you write a letter to express interest in a full time position within your company?

My friend works part time as a meat cutter and there is a full time position open at his company. How do you write a letter to be considered for the position? Are there any templates on the web? I checked microsoft but they don't have anything for this type of situation.Can anyone suggest something?

2. Since he works there he needs to talk to human resources in person, not in a letter.
3. The best avenue for a job within the company is via word of mouth/relationship with his/her manager.... If the manager doesn't like him/her, don't worry, he could have a letter from Queen Elizabeth and it won't help... when the hiring manager asks his current manager how he is, it'll all come out. Hence, he should start with his immediate supervisor and bring a copy of the ad and mention that he is interested and ask him how he could go about to be considered for the position...then take it from there.
