need help writing letter to creditors?

My mother died earlier this year, and I've been told that I won't be held liable for settling in outstanding debts she may have had. I read that I need to send a formal letter informing any of her creditors that there are no assets in her estate to cover the debt and to include a copy of the death certificate. My question is,Other than informing the creditors of the lack of assets in her estate, what else should I include in the letter? Are there any websites that offer templates or examples for such a letter? I'm only 18, and I'm not sure what the letter should include.

Public Comments

  1. Who is the executor (administrator) of her estate? That party should be handling this, with legal advice.
  2. Dear Sir/Madam, This letter is to inform you of the Death of Name of Mom and her account number for the Visa/Mastercard (whichever applies) Attached is a copy of the Death Certificate and that there are no assets in her estate. Respectfully Sign your name If you have a copy of her credit card statement include that also Make sure you cut up all the charge cards, do not be tempted to use them
  3. I am sorry for your loss. Sassy's answer is very good. The only thing i would add to it is if you were a joint borrower on any loans for example, if she shared a credit card with you, you may want to modify that letter in order to keep the account open in your name. Keep in mind if you do so, they can hold you responsible for the bill, so you may not want to do this. Only if there is little or no balance, and you need a credit card open. Then you would say (for that card only). This letter is to inform you of the death of Mrs. X, formerly a joint account holder with me on Visa card 4444..... Mrs. X passed away on (date) and left no estate. Her death certificate is enclosed. As a joint account holder, I would like the account to remain open in my name only. Sincerely, (your name) Don't use any cards that were in your mom's name only, though, as that is fraud and can get you into trouble.
