How long would it take to learn how to edit a website template?
I am planning on starting a small business and need to make a website. But i dont want to waste heaps of money on an expensive web designer. I've played with dreamweaver abit but its hard to understand simple things such as changing background colours, making it fade into different colours etc. How long would it take to learn some basic code?

- About 4 years in college, which is why it is not cheap to hire a web designer/developer. It is our career, it is something we specialize in. If you want your site to be functional, you are going to have to learn HTML, CSS, AJAX, and PHP for starters. Then throw in some color theory, interface design, visual hierarchy, and typography for good measure. It is not a simple task, I assure you. However, to help you out. You can find web design students on the cheap on craigslist. They are looking to expand their portfolio so they will do web work for 1/10th the cost of a professional developer. Just put a post under the creative gigs, or the web/info/design section that you are looking for a student to work on a web design for you. When I was in college I used to do sites for $150.
- http://www.w3schools.com/htmL/ check this site out they got tutorials and stuff that should help answer questions you have on how to do things. Most of them you can do write on their site to make sure you do it right. Also play around with what they teach like putting a table in a table.
- You don't need to edit site templates, just a CMS(Content Management System) like Wordpress or Joomla
- Go to a website called www.w3schools.com and it can teach you a lot. I took 2 classes in middle school and used this site and i am pretty good at XHTML coding... and when i need to freshen up that is the site to use. They also have a website validator so you can make sure your HTML code is up to date.
- depends on your catching power !
- If you really want to understand how to build a web business and have it explained in a simple step by step process, go to this website http://www.income-flow.com for a FREE book that explains it all. It will tell you what packages to use (Dreamweaver can be complicated), a chance to join the free hosting scheme and genuine support as you learn. There's no obligation for you to buy anything and the lessons are EXCELLENT. You'll also be up and running within a few days.
