does microsoft excel have rights to templates that I make?
I made a template for a cost control system in Excel. Can I openly sell this template or does Microsoft Excel have some rights to my template because it is made with their program?

- You bought the program which gave you rights to use it. Microsoft have no royalty rights over your work. It is obviously in their interests for people to make templates using their software becaue that means other people need to buy their software to use your templates.
- The only rights Microsoft has is the protection of their own software. So you can't change their software, decompile it to create your own software out of it and sell it, etc. Templates are not part of the software application. They are documents created by the software, e.g, Excel. So all documents (templates included) are your own.
- Though you may have saved it as a template it is still a document that you created and has nothing to do with Microsoft. It would have to be a pretty good design though for people to want to buy it.
