How do I edit Flash templates I downloaded?

I downloaded a trial version of Macromedia Flash MX version 6.0. I also downloaded some free templates to use with this to edit for my site, but whenever I try to open FLA files, it says an error occurred. Whenever I try to open the SWF files, it just shows a blank image and all the menu buttons in Flash MX disappear - it just shows the SWF by itself. Help please! :)

1. These templates are likely newer versions of .fla files. They could be for Flash 8 Pro, the newer Flash CS4, who knows?
