When does a letter require a signature?

Im applying for the nursing program at my college this year. However Im required to submit 3 letters of recommendation with my application along with other things like transcripts, etc. Well, Ive already asked a physician that I know for a letter of recommendation. She agreed to type one for me, but she wanted to know how I wanted the layout of the letter. I plan on showing her a sample letter from a Microsoft Office Word template. Ive noticed though that in the sample letters from Microsoft Office Word, there are no black blank lines suggesting where a signature would go. My question is, do all letters require signatures now a days? I thought they did, but like I said I dont see a suggestion for that in the Microsoft Office Word templates. Where would the signature line in a professional letter go anyway? Im guessing under the typed name and title. Im guessing it would go a little something like this: (EXAMPLE OF CLOSING LETTER): Sincerely, Name Title _______________________ <-----(signature would go here) Is this correct? Please give feedback. Thanks! =] No wonder I was asking this Q. I knew the way I planed on doing it was awkward looking lol. Your way sounds so much better :). Thanks! (to first response)

  1. I think a letter of recommendation should have a signature. I would put the signature, and then the persons name and position underneath.
  2. Yes, all business style letters should have a signature. The closing should be: Sincerely, ____________________ (signature) Typed Name, Degree(s) Title While you may have a template from MS Office, the standard for letters of recommendation is: 1st paragraph -- describe how you know the person or what relationship you have to the person 2nd paragraph -- describe the work habits and contributions you have seen this person make to the organization they have been a part of. Usually, if there are any weaknesses, they are downplayed--otherwise, it is not a letter recommending this person. 3rd paragraph -- summarize whether you recommend this person for the program or position and a final statement of well-wishing the new organization in integrating the recommended person. Then the closing.
  3. Signature should be penned above the Name block
  4. According to business etiquette, a letter of recommendation should have a signature with the name and title of the person under it.
