How do I customize a blog on blogspot?

I have a blogspot blog called "The Perry Newsletter" at loveforsteveperry.blogspot.com and it's so bland. I don't like any of the templates they give you, but when I go and try to find a template online and replace the html code with that of one I like, it says there's an error. How can I customize my template? Any free programs or sites I can use? HELP!
