Reference letter? / A simple reference letter?

Does anyone has a template or an idea for a simple, regular or basic reference letter? Thanks in advance...

  1. Here's a link to a web page on about.com that has examples of reference letters for all sorts of situations (character reference, academic reference, recommendation letters, etc.).
  2. If you are writing a reference check with your HR Department. Many have strict rules about what can and cannot be said in a reference. i.e. it must be factual only stating years of employment, job description and if you would rehire the person if a suitable opening arose. If you are asking somebody to provide a reference then try asking for: 1. Salutation should be "To Whom It May Concern" so you can use a copy for multiple job applications. 2. Should state the name of the referee, their position, dates and relationship when you worked with them. For example "My name is Albert Zweistein and I was the Manager of Norman Stanley Fletcher when he worked for ACME Widgets between 1 April 2004 and 1 April 2008" 3. Should state skills shown and what they contributed. 4. Should highlight any particular strengths and state the recommendation. For example "I was always impressed by Norman's work ethic and in any similar Actuarial role I would strongly recommend Norman to any employer." 5. If appropriate state the reason they left or were let go. For example "I was sorry to see Norman go but we were obliged to cut staff after a merger with XYZ Widgets Company" 6. If willing the referee can also provide contact details of address and phone number. 7. End the letter with "Yours Faithfully" and the name and position of the referee. For example: "Yours faithfully, Albert Zweistein Chief Financial Officer XYZ-Acme Widgets Inc"
