I need help with website templates using Dreamweaver/FTP?

I downloaded some free templates and they come in a zip file with a css code and a index along with the images used in the index, however, when i customized the index in dreamweaver (and by customized i mean just changing the text to fit my website) and then I transfer it through a FTP to my website. The result is just my customized text with no template or images. The weird thing is when i just transfer the original css and index from the downloaded template it works, but thats no good to me because the text doesnt fit my webiste. The problem is when i try to customize the orignal index and css to fit my website and then transfer it with FTP it whacks up the tempalte/formatting/and doesnt display images or banner or anything
