Official Translator?

Hi I am going to take a test in two weeks to get an official translator certificate. At the test, we'll have to translate birth certificates, will, passports and procurations. I am proficient in English but I am not familiar with the specific vocabulary. Where can I get some templates or commercial glossaries so I can become familiar with the specific vocabulary? It will be portuguese/english and vice versa. Thanks Celso

  1. I don't know what country you will be doing it in, but if the type of certificate you are going for is anything close to the certification system that translators have in Canada, I think you will be surprised at how miserably you will fail. The accrediation system in Canada is very difficult and even if you know exactly what you are doing, many people who have been working as translators for many years fail and need to do the test several times. Being proficient is far from sufficient. Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to discourage you, but you can't translate important documents like the ones you mention without being sure about the vocabulary. Such a certificate should prove that you have become experienced enough to work independently and reliably. You should know what you are doing and know it well BEFORE the test, not after. I suggest you work with a professional and experienced translator for a while before you go for such a test.
