Web design how-to and open source software...?

I'm very familiar with computers, graphic design, and technology in general. But I'm completely ignorant when it comes to creating, uploading and maintaining a website. I purchased my domain from Godaddy and set up my free hosting account, but now I need to design my webpage. I downloaded the CoffeeCup editor, but can't seem to figure out how to create anything. I found an open source template online that I really like, but I don't know how to modify it! I certainly don't expect you to be able to suddenly teach me html and web design in response to this question, but any suggestions on good programs to use, tutorials, or build-your-website-online type sites?
